Schibboleth is a performative project with several phases inspired by the life and the poems of Paul Celan. This performance in TAMTAM 8 is the presentation by HSIEH and CHOU after their working together for three weeks in Berlin. In October, exhibitions of sound-installations and performative activities will be held in some bookestores and then Nan Hai Gallery in Taipei, Taiwan. The final presentation of this cooperation between music and dance will be a theater work in Crown Theater Taipei on November 25-28.
Paul Celan(1920-70) is one of the most important poets after World War II. He is jewish but he wrote poems in German. Schibboleth is a word of ancient Hebrew which means river and was the password of life and death when the ancient Jews retreatd from a defeated war. It is also the title of one of his poems. Celan´s parents were murdered in the Concentration Camps and this grief made writing poems in German so painful and a insoluble dilemma for him, who has exiled to Paris after the war. His poems became more and more obscure as if they were meaningless sounds. He finally commited suicide by drowning in the Seine river.
His life and poems are the starting point for this music-dance project. Now we try to interpret this silent memory from a distance. We want to feel the body and the sound in these words and to find the meaning which is flowing and changing in theater. We don´t intend to present his life but to remind ourselves in waht way we remember or forget the past.

At tamtamART, we hope not only to create free, open, and diversified conversations, but also to develop a cross-culture and cross-field exchanging art center. The members of tamtamART are from different fields including visual arts, music, photography, theater, art history, and cultural studies. We intend to build up new thoughts and concepts and to form a unique style of tamtamART through conversations with local audiences in Berlin and artists and curators from other parts of the world.
